WINIR Prague…
… and the classical liberal self
Tomorrow I will talk about the metaphysics of classical liberal self at the Prague WINIR conference. From the conclusion of my draft:
… while constraints may often enable the becoming of the self in the same way scaffolding enables the building of the house; to build a new house the old scaffolding usually has to go (and parts of the old house with it too so as to make space). If we forget the effort that needs to go into the unmaking part of the process, we might simply end up with a pile of old scaffolds and rubble our past selfs have crafted and accumulated leaving no space or possibility for any change. This is what unfreedom looks like in the anti essentialist metaphysics of the liberal self.
